Fullstory vs Hotjar: Which Behavior Analytics Tool Fits?

October 31, 2026

Philippe Hong

Compare Fullstory with the current Contentsquare offering rather than relying on older Hotjar reviews. Both provide behavioural analytics and replay, while their wider platforms include additional research and product capabilities. Choose by the tasks your team needs to complete, the plan and integrations, and how well the configured product works with your site or app.

What each tool actually is

Both products record what people do on your site or app. They differ in who they were built for.

Fullstory describes itself as a behavioral data platform for product, development, marketing and customer support teams, with analytics, conversion funnels, session replay, search and developer tools. Think of it as a microscope for digital behavior: you can ask a question of your data and pull up the exact sessions that match.

Hotjar is the friendlier entry point. It popularized the combination of heatmaps, recordings and on-page feedback for teams without a data function. Since its merger, the official Hotjar page explains that you can no longer create a new Hotjar-specific account; new users sign up through Contentsquare, which positions itself as an experience intelligence platform.

Ease of use and setup

Ease of use depends on your workflow, configuration and users. Review-site scores are not controlled usability tests and can change over time. Trial the same tasks in both products: find a session, filter a problem, inspect a funnel and share evidence with someone who can act on it.

Fullstory is a hosted service that you install with a site script or mobile SDK, with privacy controls for masking. Installation is not hard. The effort comes afterward: deciding what to tag, who gets access and how to search the data.

Use a representative task to assess fit. For page-level questions, test heatmaps, replay and feedback together. For troubleshooting, test whether you can locate the affected sessions and inspect errors. Neither task belongs exclusively to one vendor.

Heatmaps and session replay

Both platforms offer heatmaps and replay. Confirm the heatmap types, filters, zoning and error context available in the plan you are trialling. A historical Hotjar feature list is not a complete description of current Contentsquare. Check how each product handles dynamic pages, responsive layouts and your traffic sample.

Session replay is Fullstory's home turf. Its pitch is that you can search for behavior, segment by it, and jump from a customer complaint straight to the session that caused it. For support and engineering teams, that shortens the path from "a customer says it's broken" to a fix.

A few practical notes from reading heatmaps and recordings for clients:

Funnels and finding drop-offs

Both platforms offer funnel analysis, with capabilities and limits varying by plan. Test the exact event sequence, conversion window, identity rules, filters and replay drill-down needed for your journey. A drop-off identifies a location to investigate rather than proving its cause.

Compare what happens after a drop-off appears: can the team inspect relevant sessions, segment the issue, collect feedback and share it with an owner? Test that workflow directly instead of assuming the product categories settle it.

If funnel work is your main need, you may be better served by a product analytics tool alongside either of these. We compare those in best product analytics tools.

Surveys, feedback and user research

Feedback is no longer a simple yes/no distinction. Contentsquare offers surveys and feedback, while Fullstory now lists Guides and Surveys. Confirm access, targeting, response allowances, permissions and any separate product or add-on costs.

Check any AI-assisted feedback analysis against actual responses. Summaries, themes and sentiment can help triage, but need human review and do not remove response bias.

Behavioural data shows recorded actions; a survey provides a respondent's account of goals or difficulties. Neither reveals every visitor's intent. Assess whether the built-in feedback workflow meets your needs before budgeting for another product.

Integrations

Fullstory connects natively to Help Scout, UserVoice, Zendesk and Olark, plus Slack, Trello, Bugsnag, Jira and Mixpanel. That list leans toward support and engineering workflows.

Hotjar leans toward optimization. It integrates with Unbounce, Optimizely, Omniconvert and AB Tasty, and events can filter sessions and trigger surveys. The Contentsquare version lists 10+ integrations including Slack and Jira, with higher tiers offering more customization and deeper data connectivity.

Do not confuse replay or variant analysis with running a controlled experiment. Contentsquare now lists an experimentation capability; verify the actual offering and integration for your account. Confirm allocation, exposure logging, analysis and permissions before assuming either analytics plan supplies a complete testing workflow.

Pricing: what you will pay

Pricing is the area where you should confirm everything on the vendor's page, because plans and limits change.

Hotjar / Contentsquare. The official transition page, checked on 1 November 2026, directs new Hotjar users to Contentsquare and advertises up to 200,000 captured sessions per month on Free. Check response allowances, replay retention, filters and feature access separately. Do not budget from an old Hotjar Observe price; use current plans.

Fullstory. Its plans page, checked on 1 November 2026, lists FullstoryFree with 30,000 monthly sessions, 12 months of analytics retention and up to 10 users. Analytics retention is not necessarily the same as replay retention. Request a quote for paid features, add-ons, capture volume and support.

What this means in practice:

  • A small Australian team can start on either free plan at no cost, but the Contentsquare free allowance is far larger.
  • Session volume drives price on both. Estimate your monthly sessions before you talk to sales.
  • Paid Fullstory is a sales conversation, so budget time as well as money.

Privacy and data handling in Australia

Session replay records real behavior, which can include personal information. Australian businesses covered by the Privacy Act 1988 need to think about the Australian Privacy Principles. The OAIC's APP quick reference lists them, including APP 11, which requires reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference and loss.

Before you install either tool:

  1. Minimise capture. Exclude sensitive routes and data, apply masking, and test actual recordings and event payloads before production use. Do not selectively unmask personal data without a defined need and appropriate review.
  2. Assess transparency and consent. Document the purpose, applicable notice and consent requirements, and honour the configured choices. A privacy-policy statement alone does not establish lawful collection.
  3. Map data handling. Check hosting, access, subprocessors, transfers, backups and deletion, not only the primary storage region. Assess cross-border requirements for the actual arrangement.
  4. Limit access and retention. Not everyone in the company needs to watch recordings.
  5. Review applicable requirements. Establish whether the Privacy Act and any sector-specific obligations apply, especially for sensitive data or children. Masking alone does not guarantee compliance.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Hotjar (via Contentsquare) when:

  • Marketing, design or CRO owns the tool.
  • You want heatmaps, recordings and surveys in one place.
  • You are starting out and want a large free allowance.

Choose Fullstory when:

  • Engineers and support staff will use replay to reproduce bugs.
  • You need to search sessions by behavior and segment them.
  • You already have survey and A/B testing tools and want depth on behavior.

Consider neither as your only tool when you need event-level product analytics or controlled experiments. For that, see our guide to conversion rate optimisation tools.

Our perspective

We use behavior tools on client work every week, and we have seen the same pattern repeatedly: teams argue about the tool and skip the question. The question is what decision the data will change.

A heatmap that confirms what you already believed is trivia. A recording that shows five people tapping a button that looks clickable but isn't is a design brief. So we start with a hypothesis, pick the lightest tool that can test it, and add depth only when the team outgrows it.

For most startups and mid-sized businesses, that means starting on a free plan, watching real sessions for a week, and running a short survey on the pages that leak. For larger products with engineering support loads, replay with real search is worth paying for. Either way, pair the behavior data with UX metrics that actually matter so you can show whether a change worked.

The tool collects the evidence. Turning it into a better experience is still a design job.

F.A.Qs

Is Hotjar still available as a separate product?

The official Hotjar page says new accounts are created on Contentsquare. Existing users should check their account's transition and contract details. Compare current Contentsquare features and plans rather than relying on historical Hotjar packages.

Does Fullstory have surveys?

Yes. Fullstory now lists Guides and Surveys. Check the plan, targeting, response limits and any add-on costs you need. The older claim that Fullstory has no built-in feedback capability is no longer accurate.

What privacy checks matter for session replay in Australia?

Determine applicable privacy and sector requirements, minimise collection, exclude sensitive data and test masking in actual recordings. Review notices, consent where required, access, retention, subprocessors and deletion. A vendor feature or privacy-policy notice alone does not guarantee compliance.
